Chapter 6 - THE TUNNEL BENEATH VALE MANOR

The hidden ledger was only part of the evidence beneath Vale Manor.

Behind the falcon-marked stone, investigators found a steel chamber.

It contained Isabella’s documents, Elias’s maps, photographs of bribed officials, and records of trafficking routes Nathan operated through Vale shipping companies.

A second door opened into an old tunnel extending beneath the estate.

The passage led toward an abandoned carriage house half a mile away.

Nathan used it for meetings, secret transfers, and bodies.

Investigators found remains.

Five people.

One belonged to a former accountant who disappeared after questioning pension withdrawals.

Another belonged to a security officer Dominic had believed fled with company money.

The officer’s wife spent six years thinking he abandoned her.

Nathan had converted Dominic’s reputation into camouflage.

Every disappearance became believable because people assumed Dominic ordered it.

Some probably had been Dominic’s orders.

Others were Nathan’s crimes hidden beneath them.

The distinction did not make Dominic innocent.

It made the truth more complicated.

Federal prosecutor Elena Shaw offered Dominic a cooperation agreement.

Complete disclosure of criminal operations.

Surrender of illegal assets.

Testimony against Nathan, Claire, Vincent Bennett, and corrupted officials.

In exchange, legitimate businesses and employee pensions would be protected where possible.

Dominic would still face charges.

“How many years?” Mia asked after he told her.

“I don’t know.”

“You are agreeing?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He looked toward Harper playing with colored blocks.

“Because a child should not grow up inside a house built over bodies.”

Mia studied him.

“Are you doing this for Harper?”

“For her. For Isabella. For Elias. For everyone I hurt while believing Nathan’s lies.”

“Those are not the same thing.”

“No.”

He did not hide behind manipulation.

Nathan had deceived him.

Dominic had still chosen violence.

Mia respected the answer.

The estate was searched for weeks.

Harper became frightened whenever workers approached the basement.

Dominic ordered the wine cellar sealed until the case ended.

Then Harper asked something unexpected.

“Can we paint it yellow?”

Mia looked horrified.

“Why?”

“So it doesn’t stay scary.”

Dominic crouched beside her.

“You never have to go down there again.”

“I know.”

Harper held up a yellow crayon.

“But somebody else might.”

The child did not want the room erased.

She wanted it changed.

Dominic promised that one day, if Mia agreed, the cellar would become something no one feared.
