Chapter 14 - THE VERDICT AND THE YELLOW ROSES

The principal fraud case ended the following winter with guilty pleas and convictions on multiple counts. Victor received a lengthy prison sentence for his role in the conspiracy and witness intimidation. Separate proceedings established that he had helped arrange the attack on Marco and the effort to silence Daniel. The exact extent of every participant's responsibility was still contested, but the families finally had answers supported by evidence rather than rumor.

Elena stood outside the courthouse holding Daniel's old wedding ring in her palm. She had kept it in a drawer for years, unable to decide what it meant to carry grief into a new life.

"He would have liked the café," she said.

Dante stood beside her. "I think so."

"He would have loved watching Sophia run it."

"She's already a stricter manager than I ever was."

Elena smiled through tears.

Dante's own reckoning continued. He settled civil claims tied to the misused shipping companies, surrendered interests that could not be operated lawfully, and cooperated with the oversight imposed on the remaining legitimate businesses. The transition cost him influence and much of the fortune he'd once considered permanent. He did not pretend it absolved his past.

On the anniversary of Marco's death, he visited the cemetery alone. He brought yellow roses from his mother's garden. He told his brother what had happened, speaking quietly because no one else needed to hear.

That evening he found Elena closing the café. Sophia was asleep in a chair with Mr. Whiskers tucked under her chin.

"Long day?" Elena asked.

May you like

"The longest."

She opened her arms. He stepped into them and rested his forehead against her shoulder. There were no witnesses, no declarations, and no bargain. Just two people who knew how much could be lost and had chosen, carefully, not to waste what remained.
