Chapter 11 - THE TRIAL OF THE OLD LOYALTIES

The months that followed were not clean or dramatic. They were made of interviews, subpoenaed records, court hearings, and frightened witnesses deciding whether to tell the truth.

Isabella testified about the counterfeit seal. Salvatore Costa faced financial charges after investigators traced Bellwether payments through his companies. Victor was charged in the broader fraud and intimidation case. Separate inquiries into Marco's murder and Daniel's death continued, supported by new witnesses and forensic evidence.

Dante testified about the seal and the false shipping authorization. Under questioning, he also acknowledged that his organization had profited from businesses he had failed to examine closely. The admission threatened his wealth and standing. He made it anyway.

Elena attended one hearing with Rebecca. She listened as a former dispatcher described a call instructing a truck to follow Daniel's car on the morning of the collision. The testimony did not bring Daniel back. It did, however, transform her private suspicion into something the court could evaluate.

Afterward, she found Dante waiting in the corridor.

"I used to think rich men could make any truth disappear," she said.

"Some can delay it for years."

"And you?"

He looked at the courtroom door. "I'm trying to stop being one of them."

She searched his face. "Trying isn't the same as succeeding."

"I know."

The estate changed while the cases proceeded. Dante replaced the informal household rules with written employment protections. Staff could bring children only under safe, agreed arrangements; he funded independent childcare instead of treating Elena's kitchen as an improvised nursery. Complaints went to an outside administrator. Guards no longer answered only to family loyalists.

Elena read the new policy and laughed once. "It took a three-year-old to get you to write down that people deserve respect?"

Dante accepted the criticism. "Apparently."

Sophia, meanwhile, returned to the rose garden for the first time since the threat. She found the yellow rosebush alive, exactly as Dante had hoped.

"You kept it," she told him.

"The gardener did most of the work."

May you like

"Then thank him."

Dante smiled. "I will."
