Chapter 8 - THE BETRAYAL THAT BROKE THE EMPIRE

Police detained two intruders near the rear entrance.

Carmine disappeared before officers reached the estate.

The investigation expanded rapidly.

Company records revealed that Carter Industrial Logistics had ignored repeated safety complaints.

Several executives had approved misleading reports.

Money intended for equipment upgrades had been diverted.

Carmine's signature appeared on multiple documents.

But the most disturbing discovery concerned my attack.

Six months earlier, my armored vehicle had been ambushed while traveling through an industrial district.

The official investigation had treated it as a rival gang attack.

Now investigators found communications suggesting someone had leaked my route.

The source appeared to be inside my organization.

Carmine had access to the schedule.

So had several other people.

The evidence did not yet establish who ordered the attack.

But it raised questions I could no longer ignore.

Elena sat across from me in the study.

“Dominic, you need to cooperate fully.”

I nodded.

“I will.”

She hesitated.

“You understand this may expose your own criminal activities.”

“Yes.”

“You could lose everything.”

I looked toward the window.

For months, I had believed losing the use of my legs was the worst thing that could happen.

Now I understood something.

I had spent years building an empire that could destroy people without my even noticing.

And a woman whose mother had died because of that empire was the person who had helped me survive.

I looked at Elena.

“Then let's find out what I actually own.”
