Chapter 11 - THE PRICE OF THE TRUTH

Carmine was arrested in another state.

Investigators alleged that he had participated in financial fraud, obstruction, and the conspiracy surrounding my attack.

Further evidence connected him to the suppression of workplace safety complaints at Carter Industrial Logistics.

He denied responsibility.

But the records were extensive.

The case against him moved toward trial.

Meanwhile, I faced my own reckoning.

The authorities were investigating criminal operations connected to my organization.

My attorney warned me.

“Cooperation won't erase what you've done.”

I nodded.

“I know.”

“You may face charges.”

“I know.”

“You may lose control of the businesses.”

I looked toward the river.

“Then I lose them.”

Elena studied me.

“Why are you doing this?”

I thought of Faith.

Of Margaret Willis.

Of the workers whose complaints had disappeared into filing cabinets.

Of the men who had obeyed me because they were afraid.

“Because I spent years believing loyalty meant silence.”

I looked at her.

“And I was wrong.”

The legal process was long.

Painful.

Public.

Some people called me weak.

Others called me a hypocrite.

Maybe they were right about the second part.

I had changed only after suffering myself.

But I could not change when I began.

Only what I did next.
