Marcus was cleared of knowingly participating in the scheme, though his failures of oversight remained.
Helen Brooks returned safely.
Arthur and Margaret moved into permanent apartments of their choosing.
Roman established an independent retirement and emergency support fund for former Kane employees.
Not as charity.
As recognition of years of service.
He also began changing his business.
Closing illegal operations.
Removing corrupt executives.
And building something he could be proud to leave behind.
But the greatest change in his life wasn't financial.
It was Lily.
One evening, he found her in the estate garden.
She was planting flowers.
Roman approached.
“What are you doing?”
She smiled.
“Making this place less intimidating.”
He looked around.
“Is it intimidating?”
“Roman, your front gate looks like it belongs to a medieval fortress.”
He laughed.
She smiled.
Then he grew serious.
“Lily.”
She looked up.
“Yes?”
“I've spent most of my life believing love was something people used against you.”
Her expression softened.
He stepped closer.
“You showed me something different.”
Lily's eyes filled.
Roman took her hands.
“I love you.”
She stopped breathing.
He smiled nervously.
“I know my life is complicated.”
She laughed softly.
“That's one word for it.”
He smiled.
“But I want a future with you.”
Lily looked at him.
Then whispered, “I love you too.”
Roman closed his eyes.
Relief washed over him.
He kissed her.
Not because he wanted to possess her.
