Chapter 13 - THE CHOICE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Elizabeth finally told Roman the truth.
She had helped Charles Whitaker create fraudulent accounts.
She had stolen money.
Used false identities.
And betrayed people who trusted her.
When federal investigators began closing in, she agreed to cooperate.
But Whitaker discovered her plans.
Daniel helped her disappear because he feared Whitaker would kill her.
Arthur had been entrusted with the evidence.
Marcus had been manipulated.
And Helen Brooks had been framed.
Roman listened without interrupting.
Then asked, “What do you want from me?”
Elizabeth looked at him.
“Help.”
Roman stared.
She continued.
“I want to testify against Whitaker.”
“Then contact the authorities.”
“I need protection.”
Roman leaned back.
For years, he had believed family loyalty meant unquestioning obedience.
Now he understood something different.
Love didn't require protecting people from the consequences of their actions.
He looked at his mother.
“I'll help you speak to the authorities.”
Elizabeth exhaled.
“But I won't hide what you did.”
Her face changed.
“Roman—”
“No.”
He stood.
“You don't get to ask me to become another person who keeps your secrets.”
Elizabeth began crying.
Roman looked at her.
“I loved you when I thought you were dead.”
His voice broke.
“And part of me still loves you.”
He swallowed.
“But I won't let that love destroy anyone else.”
May you like
Elizabeth lowered her head.
For the first time, she didn't argue.
