Chapter 9 - THE PRICE OF SAVING HIM

Thomas's arrest did not end the investigation.
His records implicated corrupt police officers, customs officials, freight executives, and members of Dominic's organization.
Detective Raymond Vale was found hiding in Michigan.
He had falsified Clara's shooting report after receiving money from Thomas's associates.
He had also interfered with the investigation into Sofia's death.
Victor Saye's involvement was more complicated.
He had discovered irregularities but concealed them to protect the Castiglione family from scandal.
His secret investigation had been compromised, and his attempts to preserve Dominic's power had placed innocent people in danger.
Federal prosecutors charged Victor with obstruction and financial offenses.
Dominic cooperated.
His lawyers warned him that opening the books could destroy his businesses and expose his own crimes.
He gave investigators the records anyway.
Clara visited Leo regularly during his recovery.
He had nightmares.
He sometimes hid food.
He hated sudden noises.
Dominic learned to ask before entering his room and to explain changes in routine.
Some days Leo wanted company.
Some days he wanted silence.
Clara respected both.
One afternoon, Leo asked whether his mother had been brave.
Clara answered carefully.
“Yes.”
“Was she scared?”
“Probably.”
“Can you be both?”
May you like
Clara smiled sadly.
“I think that's what bravery usually is.”
