Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN WHO WALKED AWAY

When Clara was discharged from physical therapy, Dominic offered her a room in his mansion.
She refused.
He offered to pay her living expenses.
She refused those too.
He had already covered medical costs directly connected to the shooting, which she accepted after an independent attorney reviewed the arrangement.
But she would not exchange one kind of dependence for another.
“I need to know who I am outside all of this,” she told him.
Dominic looked disappointed.
But he nodded.
“I understand.”
Clara returned to her apartment.
She took a position with a nonprofit helping families overwhelmed by emergency medical bills.
Her own experience had shown her how easily medical debt could become a weapon against desperate people.
Tommy pleaded guilty to fraud-related offenses.
His cooperation reduced his sentence, but he still served time.
Clara visited occasionally.
Their conversations were difficult.
He apologized without asking her to forget.
She listened without promising forgiveness.
Dominic began closing the remaining illegal parts of his organization.
The process cost him money, influence, and relationships.
Former allies called him weak.
Some threatened him.
He reported those threats rather than retaliating.
For the first time, he was trying to build a life that did not require fear to maintain it.
Clara watched from a distance.
She cared about him.
That frightened her.
