Chapter 4 - THE SIGNATURE THAT WASN'T HERS

Laurel spent the next three days working with Hannah and Evelyn.

They reviewed the foundation records.

The pattern became clear.

Someone had forged Laurel's authorization on a series of financial transfers.

The money moved through companies controlled by individuals connected to Pierce Rowan.

Hannah contacted federal investigators.

Laurel provided copies of the documents and a detailed account of how she had discovered the discrepancies.

She also reported the assault at the anniversary party.

The detective who took her statement listened without judgment.

When Laurel finished, he asked:

“Do you feel safe returning home?”

“No.”

“Then don't.”

The simplicity of the answer nearly made her cry.

Meanwhile, Beckett hired an independent forensic accounting firm.

He ordered a review of every transaction involving the foundation.

The results confirmed his suspicions.

The signatures were inconsistent with Laurel's verified handwriting.

Several approvals had been entered using credentials assigned to Pierce's administrative staff.

Beckett confronted Pierce.

“Explain this.”

Pierce studied the documents.

“It's probably a technical issue.”

“Eighteen million dollars isn't a technical issue.”

Pierce's expression hardened.

“You've been distracted lately.”

Beckett looked up.

“Careful.”

Pierce smiled faintly.

“I'm trying to protect you.”

“From what?”

“Your wife.”

The room went silent.

Beckett slowly stood.

“What did you say?”

Pierce held his gaze.

“Laurel has been asking questions. Dangerous questions.”

Beckett felt cold.

“About the foundation?”

“Yes.”

“And you didn't tell me?”

Pierce hesitated.

“I was handling it.”

Beckett stared at the man who had stood beside him for twenty years.

For the first time, he wondered whether loyalty had simply been another word for convenience.
