Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN WHO BUILT SOMETHING BETTER

Laurel moved to a coastal town in Oregon.

Daniel lived nearby.

Evelyn visited often.

Hannah remained a trusted friend.

Laurel used part of her divorce settlement to establish a nonprofit organization supporting survivors of domestic abuse and financial coercion.

She called it Second Harbor.

The organization offered legal referrals, financial education, emergency housing partnerships, and employment assistance.

Laurel insisted on independent oversight.

She had learned what happened when charitable organizations existed only to polish powerful people's reputations.

Within two years, Second Harbor helped hundreds of people.

Laurel worked long hours.

But the work felt different.

She wasn't protecting a man's image.

She was helping people rebuild their lives.

One afternoon, she stood outside the organization's new office.

A woman approached.

“Are you Laurel Mercer?”

“Yes.”

The woman smiled nervously.

“I just wanted to say thank you.”

Laurel looked confused.

“For what?”

“I read your story. It helped me leave.”

Laurel's eyes filled.

The woman continued.

“I thought I had nowhere to go.”

Laurel took her hand.

“You deserved somewhere safe.”

The woman nodded.

“So did you.”

Laurel smiled through tears.

For the first time, she understood that her worst night had not defined the rest of her life.

It had simply forced her to begin again.
