Chapter 9 - THE MAN WHO BETRAYED HIS OWN BROTHER

Grant met with federal investigators the following week.
He provided financial records from Wexler Logistics.
Internal communications.
Security contracts.
And evidence that Victor had been using company warehouses to conceal illegal shipments.
The records showed Victor had ordered unauthorized modifications to Warehouse 19.
Fire doors were disabled.
Security cameras were redirected.
Maintenance reports were falsified.
Grant had approved several contracts without reviewing them.
He had trusted his brother.
Now he understood what that trust had cost.
During the investigation, Grant received a call from Victor.
“Brother.”
Grant's expression hardened.
“Where are you?”
Victor laughed.
“You've become sentimental.”
“People died.”
“One firefighter.”
Grant closed his eyes.
“And nearly a janitor.”
Victor sighed.
“You're letting a nurse destroy the family.”
Grant looked toward the investigators.
“No.”
He took a breath.
“You destroyed the family.”
Victor went silent.
Then his voice changed.
“You think they'll protect you?”
Grant didn't answer.
Victor continued.
“You've forgotten who taught you how this city works.”
Grant looked at the photograph of his mother on his desk.
Then at the recording device.
“No,” he said quietly.
“I remember exactly.”
The call ended.
Investigators traced the communication.

Victor was still in Chicago.
And he was preparing to leave the country.
