Chapter 10 - THE ARREST AT THE PRIVATE AIRFIELD

Victor Wexler was arrested at a private airfield outside Chicago.
He had two passports.
Several bags of cash.
And documents linking him to shell companies used for illegal shipments.
The arrest was coordinated by federal and local authorities.
No dramatic shootout.
No heroic confrontation.
Just investigators doing their jobs.
Victor resisted verbally.
Threatened lawsuits.
Demanded to call powerful friends.
But the evidence was substantial.
He faced charges related to racketeering, obstruction, conspiracy, and the warehouse fire.
Further proceedings would determine responsibility for Owen's death.
When Rebecca called me, I was holding Hope against my chest for the first time without the incubator between us.
Her tiny cheek rested against my skin.
Her breathing was steady.
“Victor's in custody,” Rebecca said.
I closed my eyes.
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
Then I looked down at Hope.
“Did you hear that, sweetheart?”
She moved one tiny hand.
I began crying.
Rebecca's voice softened.
“Hannah?”
“I'm here.”
“You did it.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
I looked at my daughter.
“Owen did.”
He had noticed the danger.
He had tried to warn people.
He had gone back inside for Luis.
And now the truth was finally coming out.

That night, I slept for four uninterrupted hours.
The longest stretch since Owen died.
