Chapter 13 - THE EMPIRE HE WALKED AWAY FROM

Ethan's decision to leave organized crime was not simple.
His legitimate companies employed thousands of people.
But some business relationships had been built through intimidation and illegal arrangements.
He couldn't simply announce that he was finished and expect the consequences to disappear.
He hired independent legal counsel.
Cooperated with authorities.
Separated legitimate operations from criminal activities.
And accepted that he might face legal and financial consequences.
Some former associates turned against him.
Others tried to pressure him into staying.
Ethan refused.
He sold several businesses.
Restructured others.
And stepped away from relationships that depended on violence.
It took years.
There were setbacks.
Legal proceedings.
Financial losses.
And difficult conversations.
But he kept going.
One evening, he came to my apartment after a meeting with his attorneys.
He looked exhausted.
I made tea.
He sat at the kitchen table.
“Bad day?”
He nodded.
“Very.”
I placed the cup in front of him.
“Want to talk?”
He looked at me.
“I'm tired of being afraid of what happens if I stop being the man everyone expects.”
I sat across from him.
“Then stop being him.”
He smiled faintly.
“You make it sound easy.”
I shook my head.
“It isn't.”
He looked down.
“But Lily deserves a father who comes home.”
His eyes filled.
“Yes.”
I reached across the table.
“So do you.”
May you like
He squeezed my hand.
And for the first time, I believed he might actually make it.
