Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO CHOSE HER OWN FUTURE

I returned to Columbia the following semester.

Not as a full-time student.

Not immediately.

I had a daughter.

A complicated life.

And years of academic work to rebuild.

But I started.

One class.

Then two.

I studied after Lily went to sleep.

I attended laboratory sessions while she stayed with trusted caregivers.

I learned to ask for help without feeling ashamed.

Ethan offered financial support for Lily.

I accepted a formal arrangement through our attorneys because she was his daughter and he had responsibilities.

But I refused to let him control my education.

He respected that.

We also began family counseling.

Not because I had decided to reunite with him.

Because we needed to learn how to communicate as parents.

Our history was complicated.

Our trust had been damaged.

And Lily deserved better than two adults fighting over the past.

During one session, Ethan looked at me.

“I still love you.”

My heart tightened.

The counselor remained quiet.

I took a breath.

“I know.”

He swallowed.

“Do you love me?”

I looked down.

Then answered honestly.

“Part of me never stopped.”

His eyes filled.

“But love isn't enough,” I continued.

He nodded.

“I know.”

I looked at him.

“If we're ever going to have a future, it has to be different.”

He leaned forward.

“How?”

“No secrets.”

He nodded.

“No fear.”

Another nod.

“And no world where our daughter has to grow up surrounded by violence.”

Ethan looked at me for a long time.

Then said:

“I'm working on leaving that world.”

May you like

I studied him.

“Then keep working.”
