Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO LEARNED TO BAKE BREAD

The bakery survived.
The court rejected the immediate attempt to remove Hannah while the property dispute continued.
Later, a negotiated settlement and independent community financing allowed Willow & Rye to secure its building.
Hannah insisted on retaining ownership and control.
Dante respected that.
He offered advice when asked.
Carried flour when needed.
And learned to bake.
Badly.
His first loaf was hard enough to use as a doorstop.
Hannah stared at it.
Then burst out laughing.
Dante frowned.
“It's bread.”
She shook her head.
“It's a weapon.”
He looked offended.
“I followed the recipe.”
“You kneaded it like you were interrogating it.”
He laughed.
Samuel sat nearby.
He lifted the loaf.
Tapped it against the table.
Then smiled.
“Strong.”
Hannah laughed harder.
Dante shook his head.
“Everyone's a critic.”
But he kept trying.
Over time, he learned.
How to measure flour.
How to wait for dough to rise.
How to recognize when bread was ready.
He learned that some things couldn't be rushed.
That pressure didn't always help.
That patience mattered.
One evening, Hannah found him standing beside the oven.
He held a loaf.
Golden.
Warm.
Perfectly shaped.
She stared.
“You made that?”
He nodded proudly.
“Without supervision.”
She examined it.
Then tore off a piece.
Tasted it.
Her eyes widened.
“It's good.”
Dante smiled.
“Really?”
She nodded.
“Really.”
He looked absurdly pleased.
Hannah laughed.
Then grew quiet.
“Dante?”
He turned.
“Yes?”
“Why did you stay?”
He looked at her.
“You know why.”
She shook her head.
“I want to hear you say it.”
He took a breath.
“Because I love you.”
Silence.
Hannah stared.
He continued.
“Not because you gave me money.”
Her eyes filled.
“Not because you helped me understand Mick.”
He stepped closer.
“Because you see me when I don't know how to see myself.”
Hannah began crying.
Dante stopped.
“Did I say something wrong?”
She laughed through tears.
“No.”
He looked confused.
She reached for his hand.
“I love you too.”
Dante went still.
Then smiled.
A real smile.
Open.
Unprotected.
Happy.
He kissed her.
Softly.
Carefully.
As though love was something precious enough to handle gently.
Outside, snow began falling.
Inside, the bakery smelled of warm bread.
And the man who had once controlled rooms through fear finally understood what it meant to be wanted.
Not for his name.
May you like
Not for his money.
But for himself.
