Chapter 13 - THE FALL OF ALDO MORETTI

The investigation into Ashcroft Holdings expanded.
Financial records connected several shell companies to Aldo Moretti.
Witnesses described pressure campaigns.
Improper payments.
And intimidation.
The old mill fire remained difficult to prove after so many years.
But investigators uncovered evidence of related financial misconduct and conspiracy.
Aldo was charged.
His attorneys denied the allegations.
The legal process moved slowly.
Dante cooperated with authorities.
He provided documents.
Testified where required.
And accepted scrutiny of his own businesses.
For years, he'd believed his name protected him.
Now he understood that accountability had to apply to him too.
The trial attracted national attention.
Reporters described the Moretti family's influence.
The history of Briar Hollow.
The disputed land acquisitions.
And the testimony of residents who had waited decades to be heard.
Hannah attended several hearings.
Samuel went once.
He sat quietly beside his daughter.
When he saw Aldo across the courtroom, his hands trembled.
Hannah held them.
“You're okay, Dad.”
He nodded.
Dante sat nearby.
Not beside the defense.
Not behind Aldo.
Beside the people who had been harmed.
After weeks of testimony, the jury returned guilty verdicts on multiple financial and conspiracy charges.
Aldo remained defiant.
He looked toward Dante.
“You destroyed the family.”
Dante stood.
For a moment, the courtroom seemed to hold its breath.
Then he answered quietly:
“No.”
He looked toward Hannah.
“I'm trying to stop what destroyed other families.”
Aldo stared.
Dante turned away.
He didn't feel victorious.
He felt tired.
Sad.
Relieved.
And strangely free.
Outside the courthouse, Hannah found him standing beneath a tree.
She approached.
“Are you all right?”
He looked at her.
“I don't know.”
She nodded.
He smiled faintly.
“That's becoming a familiar answer.”
She laughed softly.
He took a breath.
“I thought I'd feel something bigger.”
“Like what?”
“Triumph.”
Hannah considered him.
“Maybe justice isn't supposed to feel like winning.”
He looked at her.
She continued.
“Maybe it's supposed to make room for people to heal.”
Dante stared.
Then nodded.
“Yes.”
He looked toward the courthouse.
For the first time, the Moretti name no longer felt like a crown.
May you like
It felt like a history he had to face.
And a future he could choose to change.
