Chapter 12 - THE DAY THE EMPIRE BEGAN TO CHANGE

The case against Victor Calder exposed serious misconduct within Gabriel's business network.

Fraud.

Coercion.

Unauthorized surveillance.

Misuse of personal information.

And the endangerment of three infants.

Gabriel cooperated with investigators.

He also began restructuring his companies.

He ended relationships with associates involved in illegal operations.

Hired independent compliance officers.

And reduced his involvement in the criminal networks that had shaped his reputation.

The changes were expensive.

Some partners withdrew.

Others threatened lawsuits.

Gabriel continued.

One evening, we sat in his garden.

The triplets slept inside.

Wren played beside us.

Gabriel looked exhausted.

"Long day?" I asked.

He nodded.

"Very."

I smiled.

"Want to talk about it?"

He hesitated.

Then said:

"I spent years believing I had to be feared."

I looked at him.

"And now?"

He watched Wren stack plastic cups.

"Now I'm trying to become someone my children won't be afraid of."

I reached for his hand.

He looked at me.

"Claire."

"Yes?"

"I love you."

My heart stopped.

He continued.

"I know this isn't simple."

I looked down.

"No."

"I know my past isn't clean."

"No."

"And I know you don't need me to rescue you."

I smiled faintly.

"Definitely not."

He laughed softly.

Then he grew serious.

"But I want to build something good with you."

I looked at him.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then I whispered:

"I love you too."

Gabriel closed his eyes.

When he opened them, they were wet.

Wren crawled toward us.

She grabbed his knee.

Gabriel laughed and lifted her.

"Apparently we have an audience."

I smiled.

"She has opinions."

May you like

He kissed my forehead.

And for the first time, I allowed myself to imagine a future where love didn't mean losing control of my own life.
