Chapter 11 - THE TRUTH ABOUT ELENA

Gabriel kept a photograph of Elena beside his bed.

I saw it the first time I visited the nursery upstairs.

She was beautiful.

Dark hair.

Warm smile.

One hand resting on her pregnant stomach.

I stopped.

Gabriel noticed.

"That's Elena."

I nodded.

"She's beautiful."

He smiled sadly.

"She was."

We stood quietly.

Then he said:

"I don't want you to think I'm trying to replace her."

I looked at him.

"I don't."

He swallowed.

"Sometimes I feel guilty."

"For what?"

"For being happy."

I understood more than he knew.

My own relationship with Wren's father had ended painfully.

For months, I believed I had failed my daughter by not giving her a traditional family.

Then I learned that a peaceful home mattered more than appearances.

I looked at Gabriel.

"Loving someone new doesn't erase someone you lost."

He stared.

I continued.

"Elena will always be their mother."

He nodded.

"And you don't have to stop loving her to care about someone else."

His eyes filled.

We sat beside the nursery window.

Gabriel told me stories about Elena.

How she sang off-key.

How she hated formal dinners.

How she insisted on volunteering at a children's hospital despite his concerns.

I laughed.

"She sounds stubborn."

He smiled.

"Very."

Then he looked at me.

"She would have liked you."

I shook my head.

"You don't know that."

He smiled faintly.

"No."

A pause.

"But I think she would."

That evening, I went home and held Wren close.

I thought about Elena.

A mother who had never been able to watch her children grow.

I thought about Gabriel.

A father learning to survive grief.

And I thought about myself.

A woman who had spent so long being afraid that she had almost forgotten what hope felt like.

I wasn't ready to call it love.

But something was growing.

Slowly.

May you like

Carefully.

And this time, nobody was forcing it.
