Chapter 12 - THE FAMILY THAT HAD TO HEAL

Elena's return did not make everything simple.
She had survived confinement, threats, and fear.
She needed medical care.
Counseling.
Time.
Sophia needed support too.
Her silence had been a response to overwhelming fear.
Her memories had helped investigators, but she was still a little girl.
She needed to play.
Sleep.
Laugh.
And feel safe.
Dante began changing the way he lived.
He reduced his involvement in criminal activities.
Cooperated with investigators.
And started separating his legitimate businesses from the networks Vincent had exploited.
The process was difficult.
But he continued.
I returned to Bellanote.
Tony hugged me so tightly I could barely breathe.
“You scared me,” he said.
I laughed.
“I scared myself.”
He looked at me.
“And the bakery?”
I smiled sadly.
“Still a dream.”
Tony shook his head.
“Not forever.”
A few weeks later, Elena visited the restaurant.
She came with Sophia.
Dante followed a few steps behind.
Sophia ran toward me.
“Purple Maya!”
I laughed and lifted her.
“Hey, sweetheart.”
Elena approached.
Her eyes filled.
“You're Maya.”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
She took my hands.
“Thank you.”
I shook my head.
“You don't have to—”
“Yes,” she whispered. “I do.”
She looked at Sophia.
“My daughter told me about the purple crayon.”
I smiled.
Elena continued.
“You listened when she couldn't explain.”
I swallowed.
“She was very brave.”
Elena nodded.
“She was.”
Dante watched quietly.
Later, Elena asked about my bakery dream.
I told her everything.
The recipes.
The savings.
The tiny storefront I'd been watching for months.
She smiled.
“What's stopping you?”
I laughed.
“About eighty thousand dollars.”
Elena looked thoughtful.
But she didn't offer money.
Instead, she asked:
“Do you have a business plan?”
I stared.
“Actually, yes.”
May you like
She smiled.
“Then maybe we should talk.”
