Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE LOCKED WINDOW

Elena Russo was found alive.
She was weak.
Exhausted.
And frightened.
But alive.
Investigators entered the rehabilitation facility with a warrant.
Elena was in a private room on the second floor.
The windows were locked.
Her phone had been taken.
Her medical records were incomplete.
When Detective Bennett entered, Elena stared at her.
“Who are you?”
The detective showed her identification.
“I'm here to help you.”
Elena began crying.
Dante arrived after investigators confirmed it was safe.
He stood outside the room.
For several seconds, he couldn't move.
I stood beside him.
“Dante.”
He looked at me.
His face was pale.
“What if she hates me?”
I swallowed.
“She might have a lot of feelings.”
He nodded.
I continued.
“But she deserves to see you.”
He took a breath.
Then entered.
Elena sat beside the window.
Her dark hair was tangled.
Her face was thinner than in the photographs.
But when she saw Dante, her expression changed.
“Dante?”
He stopped.
“Elena.”
She covered her mouth.
He crossed the room slowly.
Then knelt beside her chair.
“I'm sorry,” he whispered.
She shook her head.
“No.”
He took her hand.
“I should have found you sooner.”
She began crying.
“You found me.”
They held each other.
I stepped away.
This moment belonged to them.
Later, Elena asked about Sophia.
Dante showed her photographs.
The drawings.
The purple crayon.
Elena smiled through tears.
“My brave girl.”
Dante told her Sophia had spoken again.
Elena closed her eyes.
“Thank God.”
She looked at him.
“Is she safe?”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
Elena began crying harder.
That evening, Sophia visited with a child psychologist and family support staff.
She stood in the doorway.
Elena opened her arms.
“Sophia.”
The little girl froze.
Then ran.
“Mommy!”
Elena caught her.
They held each other.
Sophia sobbed into her mother's shoulder.
Dante stood beside the door.
Tears ran down his face.
I watched from the hallway.

For the first time in days, the little girl who had whispered purple was laughing.
And her mother was there to hear it.
