Chapter 7 - THE MOTHER WHO FEARED THE TRUTH

Lenora Rook was waiting in the library when Gabriel and Avery returned.
She stood beside the fireplace holding a glass of wine.
Her expression was furious.
“Where have you been?”
Gabriel removed his coat.
“Out.”
Lenora looked at Avery.
“With her?”
Avery said nothing.
Gabriel stepped forward.
“Mother, we need to talk.”
Lenora laughed.
“About what? Your wife's latest attempt to embarrass us?”
Gabriel's expression hardened.
“You embarrassed yourself at Evelyn's wedding.”
Lenora went still.
“Excuse me?”
“You sent my wife to eat with the staff.”
“She was helping them.”
“You humiliated her.”
Lenora's face flushed.
“She should be grateful.”
Gabriel looked at her.
“For what?”
“For everything this family has given her.”
Avery felt something inside her finally break.
She stepped forward.
“I didn't ask your family to give me anything.”
Lenora turned.
“Oh, please.”
Avery continued.
“I married Gabriel because my father was being threatened. I didn't marry him for your money.”
Lenora laughed.
“That's what every poor girl says.”
Avery looked at her.
“Then perhaps you should stop asking poor girls to prove their worth to you.”
Silence.
Gabriel looked at Avery.
Something like admiration crossed his face.
Lenora set down her glass.
“You don't understand what you're involved in.”
Gabriel frowned.
“Then explain it.”
His mother looked away.
“Some things are better left alone.”
Avery's stomach tightened.
“The harbor?”
Lenora went pale.
Gabriel noticed.
“Mother.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“What do you know?”
Lenora backed toward the fireplace.
“You have no idea what your father did to keep this family alive.”
Gabriel stared.
“Then tell me.”
Tears filled Lenora's eyes.
For the first time, she looked old.
Frightened.
Human.
“Your father made a deal,” she whispered.
Gabriel went still.
“With whom?”
Lenora closed her eyes.
“Marcus Vale.”
The truth came slowly.
Decades earlier, Gabriel's father, Jonathan Rook, had discovered irregularities involving harbor contractors.
Some operations had concealed dangerous materials and falsified safety records.
Jonathan had wanted to report the misconduct.
But Marcus convinced him that exposing the scheme would destroy the company and put employees out of work.
Instead, Jonathan agreed to a settlement that kept certain information confidential.
Over time, Marcus used that secrecy to gain influence.
Lenora knew parts of the story.
She'd spent years protecting the family's reputation.
And when Avery entered their lives, Lenora feared the Hale property might bring everything into the open.
Avery stared.
“So you humiliated me because of my grandfather's land?”
Lenora looked away.
“I wanted you to leave.”
Gabriel's jaw tightened.
“Mother.”
Lenora began crying.
“I thought if she left, the problem would disappear.”
Avery looked at her.
For a moment, she felt pity.
Then remembered the folded place card.
The service hall.
The laughter.
And the blood beneath her gloves.
She spoke quietly.
“You didn't want the problem to disappear.”
May you like
Lenora looked up.
“You wanted me to disappear.”
