Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED HIS CHECK

Gabriel offered to fund Avery's own restoration studio.

She refused.

Not because she didn't want one.

Because she wanted to build it herself.

They were sitting in the library when he made the offer.

“Avery, you have extraordinary talent.”

She smiled.

“Thank you.”

“You could open a studio.”

“I know.”

“I could finance it.”

She shook her head.

“Gabriel.”

He stopped.

“I don't want another thing in my life that people can say you gave me.”

His expression softened.

“I understand.”

She looked at him.

“Do you?”

He nodded.

“Then tell me how you'd prefer to do it.”

Avery developed a business plan.

She rented a small workspace in Boston's South End.

Applied for financing.

Used her savings.

And took on restoration commissions from museums, private collectors, and families preserving heirloom clothing.

Her first project was a nineteenth-century christening gown.

Her second was a wedding veil damaged in a house fire.

Her third was a ceremonial jacket with intricate hand embroidery.

She named the studio:

HALE THREADWORKS.

Not Rook.

Hale.

Her mother's family name.

Her grandfather's name.

The name she'd carried before marriage.

Gabriel attended the opening.

He didn't make a speech.

Didn't buy the building.

Didn't bring photographers.

He simply stood beside her father and Evelyn while Avery welcomed her first guests.

That evening, after everyone left, Gabriel found Avery sitting on the floor surrounded by fabric samples.

She looked exhausted.

But happy.

He smiled.

“Mrs. Rook.”

She looked up.

“Yes?”

“May I congratulate you?”

She laughed.

“You may.”

He crouched.

Then kissed her cheek.

“I'm proud of you.”

Avery's eyes filled.

May you like

For the first time, she didn't feel like a woman being rescued.

She felt like a woman being seen.
