Chapter 8 - THE FATHER WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

Adrian Bell had been living in Vermont for nearly four years.
He used the name Andrew Blake.
He had no criminal record under that identity.
He lived quietly.
Worked at a repair shop.
Avoided photographs.
And never spoke about his past.
When investigators approached him, he initially denied knowing Elena.
Then they showed him a photograph of Theo.
He began crying.
Adrian agreed to speak with authorities.
He explained that after discovering the financial scheme, he'd been threatened by people connected to Celeste.
He had survived an attack that left him seriously injured.
Believing Elena and their unborn child were in danger, he disappeared under an assumed identity.
For years, he tried to gather enough evidence to return safely.
But he feared that any contact would expose them.
When Elena learned he was alive, she collapsed into a chair.
Marco caught her.
"Easy."
She looked up.
"He's alive?"
Marco nodded.
"Yes."
She covered her mouth.
Then began sobbing.
Their reunion took place in a quiet room at a secure location.
Elena entered first.
Adrian stood beside the window.
He looked older.
There were scars.
But when he saw her, his face crumpled.
"Elena."
She stopped.
For a moment, neither moved.
Then she ran into his arms.
I watched from the doorway.
Marco stood beside me.
His expression was unreadable.
"Are you all right?" I whispered.
He nodded.
Then shook his head.
"I don't know."
Adrian held Elena as if he were afraid she'd disappear.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
She shook her head.
"You're here."
"I should have come sooner."
"You're here."
Then Theo entered.
He stopped beside Marco.
"Mommy?"
Elena turned.
She knelt.
"Theo, sweetheart, there's someone I want you to meet."
Adrian lowered himself to one knee.
His hands trembled.
"Hello, Theo."
The little boy studied him.
"Are you my daddy?"
Adrian began crying.
"Yes."
Theo looked toward Elena.
She nodded.
He stepped forward.
Then wrapped his arms around Adrian's neck.
Adrian held him.
And the room filled with the kind of silence that comes when something broken begins to heal.
Marco turned away.
I touched his arm.
He looked at me.
For the first time since I'd met him, his eyes were wet.
"Seven years," he whispered.
I nodded.
He looked toward his sister.
"Seven years they stole from us."
I squeezed his hand.
"But they didn't get the rest."
He looked at me.
Then smiled sadly.
May you like
"No."
"They didn't."
