Chapter 14 - THE PROPOSAL IN THE BALLROOM

One year after the engagement dinner that exposed Celeste's lies, Marco invited the family to a celebration.

The ballroom had been redecorated.

Fresh flowers.

Warm lighting.

A long table filled with food.

But this time, there was no attempt to hide Frank.

His wheelchair stood at the head of the table.

He wore a navy suit.

And a white rose.

Straight this time.

Elena sat beside Adrian.

Theo played near the windows.

Rebecca attended with her independent support worker and attorney.

My mother sat beside my brother.

For the first time, the families were together without secrets hanging over them.

Marco stood.

He raised his glass.

"One year ago, this room was filled with people I thought I trusted."

The room grew quiet.

He looked toward Frank.

"And the person I should have listened to most was locked upstairs."

Frank's eyes filled.

Marco continued.

"I almost lost my family because I confused power with wisdom."

He looked at Elena.

"I believed lies."

Then Rebecca.

"I ignored suffering I didn't understand."

Then Adrian.

"I failed to protect people who needed help."

Finally, he looked at me.

"And one woman changed everything."

My heart began pounding.

Marco stepped away from the table.

He approached me.

"Natalie."

I stood.

He took my hands.

"One year ago, you brought my father into this room because you believed he deserved dignity."

Tears filled my eyes.

"You didn't know whether it would cost you your job."

"You didn't know whether I'd believe you."

"But you did it anyway."

He smiled.

"And because you did, my family found its way home."

Then he knelt.

The room fell silent.

"Natalie Brooks, I don't want you to save me."

His voice trembled.

"I want to spend my life making sure you never have to carry everything alone."

He opened a small velvet box.

Inside was a diamond ring.

"Will you marry me?"

I covered my mouth.

Then looked toward Frank.

He was crying.

And smiling.

I looked back at Marco.

"Yes."

He stood and embraced me.

The room erupted in applause.

Theo shouted, "Uncle Marco's getting married!"

Everyone laughed.

Frank raised his trembling hand.

"About... time."

May you like

And for the first time, the ballroom held no fear.

Only joy.
