Chapter 7 - VANESSA’S CHOICE

Vanessa did testify.
Not because Luca asked.
Her attorney negotiated cooperation.
She turned over messages.
Payments.
Audio recordings.
Her family trust.
The five-percent equity promise.
And one message that mattered more than the rest.
Marco:
Once Luca signs, the dogs are gone, the old ledger is gone, and the Moretti ports become untouchable.
Vanessa replied:
What if Emma talks?
Marco:
She won't risk her job.
That sentence made me angrier than anything else.
Not because it insulted me.
Because he was usually right about people in my position.
Silence often keeps rent paid.
Vanessa faced charges tied to conspiracy, obstruction and theft.
Cooperation reduced consequences.
Did not erase them.
Before sentencing, she asked to see me.
I almost said no.
Then curiosity won.
She looked smaller.
Not physically.
Socially.
Power stripped away reveals ordinary human proportions.
“I’m sorry.”
I sat across from her.
“For what?”
“All of it.”
“Specific.”
She looked surprised.
Good.
“For trying to bribe you.”
“Yes.”
“For threatening your job.”
“Yes.”
“For Bruno.”
My expression hardened.
“Yes.”
“For Diesel.”
“Yes.”
She swallowed.
“I told myself they were animals.”
“They are.”
That surprised her.
I continued:
“That doesn't make cruelty smaller.”
She nodded.
Then:
“I thought Luca loved Bruno more than he loved people.”
“Sometimes dogs earn it.”
She almost laughed.
Then cried instead.
“Did he ever love me?”
“That is a question for him.”
“Does he hate me?”
“Also him.”
I stood.
Vanessa looked at me.
“Why did you bring Bruno inside?”
I thought about it.
“Because you told me not to.”
She blinked.
Then I smiled slightly.
“And because he needed help.”
Both true.
Outside, Luca waited.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
He looked toward the door.
“She apologize?”
“Yes.”
“Did it help?”
“No.”
He nodded.
Same.
That was the day I understood forgiveness and reconciliation were not twins.

One could exist without the other.
