Chapter 4 - WHAT LUCA’S FATHER LEFT BEHIND

The brass tag remained exactly where I had placed it.
For once, a household habit saved something.
Lost objects went into a shallow wooden tray for thirty days before disposal.
Keys.
Cuff links.
Coins.
One child’s tiny shoe.
And Bruno’s tag.
Luca picked it up.
His father’s engraving remained on one side:
BRUNO MORETTI
A phone number long disconnected.
On the edge:
Tiny irregular teeth.
A key.
Luca returned to the study.
Inserted it.
Turned.
The hidden drawer opened.
Inside:
Three leather notebooks.
A stack of original shipping manifests.
Two envelopes.
One cassette tape.
And photographs.
Marco had not reached them.
Not yet.
The first notebook dated seventeen years earlier.
Carlo Moretti’s handwriting.
Payments.
Container numbers.
Names.
Bellini companies.
Routes leaked before hijackings.
Insurance claims paid after those same hijackings.
Bellini-controlled entities buying damaged cargo at reduced prices.
Luca sat silently.
Matteo read beside him.
Then:
“Jesus.”
The books documented almost $34 million diverted through shell companies during the old Moretti-Bellini partnership.
But money was not the worst part.
One entry:
Salvatore supplied Route 19 despite warning children were traveling with Santoro family.
Another:
No more shared manifests. Bellini values leverage over blood.
Luca closed the notebook.
His father had severed the partnership shortly after.
Never publicly explained why.
Family honor.
Silence.
The same disease powerful families always called discretion.
I looked toward Luca.
“You were going to merge with them.”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Tomorrow.”
My stomach tightened.
Bellini Infrastructure would have received minority stakes in three Moretti port operations.
Marco was not trying to hide history for pride.
If the ledger surfaced during due diligence, the merger would collapse.
More than that.
Investigators could reopen old insurance fraud and criminal matters.
Some limitations might apply.
Financial evidence still mattered.
Luca found an envelope with his name.
He opened it.
His father’s letter.
Luca, if you are reading this, I failed to tell you while I was alive. Do not repeat that failure. Secrets kept to protect a family eventually protect the wrong people.
Luca read it twice.
Then looked away.
That line changed him.
I did not understand how much until later.
Then Matteo found something modern.
A small sticky note attached to the third notebook.
Not Carlo Moretti’s handwriting.
Fresh ink.
M.B. knows about drawer. Move before Friday.
M.B.
Marco Bellini.
Somebody inside Luca’s house had warned the dead man’s archive.
Or rather—
warned Marco about it.
Vanessa and Marco were not alone.
Luca looked at Matteo.
“Who had access to this room while I was away?”
“Security logs.”
We checked.
Three people.
Vanessa.
Marco.
And Luca’s deputy chief of security.
Anthony Rizzo.
Matteo’s face changed.
Rizzo had worked for the Moretti family twelve years.

Now we had an inside man.
