Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN WHO SOLD A CHILD

Vanessa Varrick denied everything.
She sat across from investigators wearing a pale blue dress and a pearl necklace.
Her attorney occupied the chair beside her.
She looked composed.
Almost bored.
She acknowledged knowing people associated with Damian Cross.
She called the meetings ordinary charitable discussions.
She denied involvement in the attack.
And when asked about Lily's statements, she shook her head sadly.
“The poor child is traumatized. She doesn't know what she's saying.”
The investigator didn't argue.
He simply continued asking questions.
Financial records complicated Vanessa's explanation.
An entity connected to her charitable foundation had received payments from intermediaries associated with Damian's organization.
The transfers began before the attack.
The payments were described as consulting fees.
But the documents contained no clear evidence of services matching the amounts.
Then investigators obtained messages from a phone used by one of Damian's employees.
One message discussed when Lily would be traveling with her parents.
Another referred to a change in the vehicle's route.
And a third contained a chilling instruction.
THE CHILD MUST BE DELIVERED ALIVE.
Claire read the investigators' summary after Gabriel chose to share it with her.
Her hands shook.
Lily hadn't merely been caught in a shooting aimed at her father.
Someone had apparently planned to abduct her.
The arrangement became clearer through the testimony of a cooperating witness.
Vanessa had allegedly provided confidential information about Lily's routine and security arrangements.
In return, intermediaries promised her a substantial payment and influence over assets connected to the Varrick family trust.
Damian Cross intended to use the child to pressure Gabriel into surrendering valuable shipping interests.
The attack went wrong.
Gunfire erupted before the planned abduction could be completed.
Isabella was fatally injured.
Gabriel managed to get Lily to safety.
The kidnappers escaped without her.
And Vanessa returned to the family as the grieving aunt.
When Gabriel learned the allegations, he didn't speak for nearly a minute.
Then he stood.
Sebastian moved toward him.
“Boss?”
Gabriel's voice was quiet.
“Where is she?”
Sebastian hesitated.
“She's with investigators.”
Gabriel's jaw tightened.
Claire stepped forward.
“Gabriel.”
He turned.
She met his eyes.
“Lily needs her father.”
For a moment, he looked almost furious.
Then he closed his eyes.
When he opened them again, the anger remained.
But something else had joined it.
Understanding.
He sat back down.
“Tell my attorney I'll cooperate.”
That evening, Lily asked for Claire.
She was sitting in her hospital bed holding the stuffed rabbit.
Claire approached.
“Hi, sweetheart.”
Lily looked at the doorway.
“Is Aunt Vanessa coming?”
Claire knelt beside her.
“Your care team is making sure visits are safe.”
Lily studied her.
“Even if she says she's nice?”
Claire felt tears gather.
“Even then.”
The child looked down.
Then whispered, “She said if I told Daddy, he'd disappear too.”
Claire's heart broke.
She didn't ask Lily to repeat the statement.
Instead, she reassured her that adults were responsible for keeping her safe and that she had done nothing wrong.
Lily reached for Claire's hand.
“Will Daddy come back?”
Claire looked toward the door.
Gabriel stood there.
His eyes were filled with tears.
He crossed the room slowly.
Knelt beside Lily.
And whispered, “I'm here, sweetheart.”
Lily began crying.
Gabriel held out his arms.
She moved into them.
For a long time, he simply held his daughter.
Then she whispered into his shoulder:
“Mommy said the song would help me remember.”
Gabriel looked at Claire.
Because they both knew now that Isabella's lullaby had been more than a bedtime ritual.
May you like
It had been a way to teach her daughter something important without frightening her.
And one part of the song remained missing.
