Chapter 6 - THE PHOTOGRAPH HIDDEN IN THE MUSIC BOX

The music box stood on Lily's dresser.

White lacquer.

A tiny dancing ballerina.

Silver stars around the lid.

Claire had noticed it the first night but hadn't touched it.

Lily disliked anyone moving her possessions.

Now, sitting beside the little girl in the hospital's playroom, Claire asked whether she had a favorite toy at home.

Lily nodded.

“My dancing box.”

“What does it play?”

Lily looked toward her.

“Mommy's song.”

Claire's heart tightened.

“Would you like somebody to bring it?”

The little girl considered the question.

Then whispered, “Not Aunt Vanessa.”

Claire kept her face calm.

“Okay.”

Gabriel retrieved the box himself.

He brought it to the hospital in a plain shopping bag.

When Claire opened the lid, the melody began.

Six descending notes.

A pause.

Three rising notes.

Exactly the tune Margaret had taught her.

Lily watched the ballerina turn.

Then, for the first time since the shooting, she smiled.

It was small.

Barely there.

But Gabriel saw it.

His face changed.

“Isabella gave her that on her fourth birthday,” he whispered.

Claire studied the box.

There was a hairline crack near the hinge.

The bottom felt uneven.

She didn't attempt to open it.

Instead, she told Gabriel about the letters and the silver bird.

He listened without interruption.

Then he called his attorney.

The music box might contain evidence, and Claire wanted it examined without damaging anything important to Lily.

A specialist inspected the box with Gabriel's permission.

Beneath a concealed panel was a small photograph.

Two girls stood outside Saint Cecilia's Children's Home.

One was Isabella.

The other was Vanessa.

Beside them stood an older woman wearing a silver bird brooch.

On the back, in faded ink, were the words:

MARION RUSK — FAMILY VISITOR, OCTOBER 1998.

Claire stared at the photograph.

She had heard that name before.

Her mother used to mention a woman named Marion who visited the children's home and made the younger children uncomfortable.

Margaret never explained why.

Gabriel looked at the photograph.

“Marion Rusk died years ago.”

Claire glanced up.

“How?”

“According to the records, in a house fire.”

He looked toward the silver bird.

“Isabella never mentioned her.”

Claire remembered the letter.

The woman with the silver bird has returned.

Perhaps Isabella hadn't meant Marion herself.

Perhaps she meant someone connected to her.

That afternoon, Claire visited Margaret.

She showed her the photograph.

Her mother's face went white.

“Where did you find this?”

“In Lily's music box.”

Margaret touched the image.

Then whispered, “Marion.”

“Who was she?”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“She arranged placements for children whose families couldn't care for them.”

“Was she a social worker?”

“Not officially. She worked with private donors.”

Claire felt cold.

Margaret continued.

“Some children who left with her were supposed to be going to relatives.”

“And?”

“Years later, we discovered some of the records were false.”

Claire stared.

“Are you saying she sold children?”

Margaret's eyes filled.

“I'm saying there were serious allegations that children were moved under fraudulent guardianship arrangements. I reported what I knew, but the organization closed before everything was resolved.”

Claire looked down at the photograph.

Vanessa had been one of those children.

So had Isabella.

Then Margaret said quietly, “Isabella's mother tried to stop Marion.”

“What happened to her?”

Her mother's voice broke.

“She disappeared.”

That evening, Gabriel's attorney uncovered another connection.

Marion Rusk's former business associate had established a private security consulting company.

Its largest recent client was a rival of Gabriel's.

A man named Damian Cross.

The same man Gabriel believed had ordered the attack on his family.

Claire stared at the corporate records.

And suddenly the title of Isabella's last letter made terrible sense.

THE SILVER BIRD WAS NEVER A MEMORY. IT WAS A WARNING.
