Chapter 12 - THE DAUGHTER WHO BROUGHT HER FATHER HOME

Elena Kovalenko saw Peter again on a Sunday afternoon.

Hannah had prepared her mother carefully.

Explained that Peter was alive.

That he had been hiding.

That he was coming.

Elena had cried.

Then asked Hannah to brush her hair.

Peter entered the assisted-living room carrying yellow roses.

Elena looked up.

Her hands began trembling.

“Peter?”

He stopped.

Tears filled his eyes.

“Elena.”

She reached toward him.

He crossed the room.

Knelt beside her wheelchair.

And took her hands.

For a long time, neither spoke.

Then Elena whispered, “You came back.”

Peter bowed his head.

“I'm sorry it took so long.”

She touched his face.

Her fingers traced the lines time had left there.

“Old,” she whispered.

Peter laughed through tears.

“You too.”

Elena smiled.

Hannah stood near the doorway.

Crying.

Laughing.

Watching two people who had lost eleven years find each other again.

Recovery wasn't simple.

Elena's stroke had changed her life.

Peter carried guilt.

Hannah carried anger.

They attended family counseling.

Some conversations were painful.

Some ended in tears.

But they kept showing up.

And slowly, they began building something new.

May you like

Not the family they had been.

The family they could still become.
