Chapter 13 - THE MAN WHO ASKED INSTEAD OF ORDERING

Diego and Navy met again at a charity event.

Two years had passed since their wedding.

Navy wore a dark green dress.

Her hair was pinned loosely.

And for the first time, she didn't feel the need to hide her back.

Diego stood near the entrance.

He looked different.

Older.

Quieter.

Less certain of his own importance.

When he saw her, he stopped.

"Navy."

She smiled faintly.

"Diego."

He looked at her.

"You look well."

"I am."

He smiled.

"I'm glad."

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Diego said:

"Would you like some coffee?"

Navy raised an eyebrow.

"Is that a request?"

He laughed softly.

"Yes."

She considered.

"All right."

They sat in a quiet café across the street.

They talked about work.

Books.

Travel.

Not about the marriage.

Not immediately.

Eventually, Diego said:

"I've been thinking about that night."

Navy looked up.

"Our wedding night?"

He nodded.

"I was cruel."

She didn't argue.

"I know."

He looked down.

"I thought power meant never having to ask."

Navy studied him.

"And now?"

He smiled sadly.

"Now I think it means being willing to hear no."

She looked at him for a long moment.

Then smiled.

"That's progress."

He nodded.

"I hope so."

They finished their coffee.

When they stood, Diego asked:

"May I see you again?"

Navy hesitated.

Then said:

"Maybe."

He smiled.

May you like

"I can live with maybe."

And for the first time, she believed him.
