Chapter 13 - THE EMPIRE BUILT ON LIES

The investigation into the port fraud continued for months.
Tommy cooperated after his arrest.
Derek Sinclair's financial records exposed the network of companies used to move money.
Khloe faced charges related to financial misconduct and conspiracy.
Evidence connected Derek and his associates to the confrontation at Vincent's mansion.
The fire had begun during an attempt to destroy records.
Vincent had died trying to escape.
Carmela attended the hearings with Rebecca.
She listened as witnesses described the final hours of her father's life.
The truth was painful.
But it was better than uncertainty.
Silas also testified.
He admitted that his negligence had allowed Khloe and Tommy unusual access to business operations.
He denied authorizing the fraudulent transfers.
Investigators examined that claim against independent records.
Some charges concerned people around him.
Others concerned weaknesses in the business structure he had created.
He cooperated with lawful oversight.
The process damaged his reputation.
Several partners withdrew.
Contracts were suspended.
Assets were frozen pending review.
For a man who had built his identity around control, the losses were enormous.
But he no longer asked Carmela to rescue him.
That was the one promise he kept.
Meanwhile, Carmela began rebuilding her father's legitimate businesses.
She did not inherit them blindly.
She hired independent auditors.
Replaced compromised managers.
Separated lawful shipping operations from disputed transactions.
And established a board that could challenge her decisions.
Rebecca watched her work.
“You're good at this.”
Carmela smiled.
“My father made me read contracts when I was sixteen.”
“Apparently he taught you well.”
“He taught me some things well.”
Her smile faded.
“Other things, not so much.”
Rebecca nodded.
“Parents can be complicated.”
Carmela looked at Vincent's photograph.
She still loved him.
She still resented the choices he had made.
Both feelings could exist.
She no longer needed to simplify him into a hero or a villain.
One afternoon, Noah called from North Carolina.
“The house is finished.”
Carmela smiled.
“Really?”
“Porch, windows, garden. Everything.”
“Send pictures.”
“I could. Or you could come see it.”
She laughed.
“I have work.”
“I know.”
He paused.
“Lily keeps asking when you're coming back.”
Carmela felt warmth spread through her chest.
Noah had never pressured her.
Never demanded explanations.
Never treated her body as a problem.
He had simply been kind.
She looked at her calendar.
Then smiled.
“I think I can take a weekend.”
When she returned to the coast, Lily ran toward her.
“Carmela!”
The little girl threw her arms around her waist.
Carmela laughed and hugged her.
Noah stood on the porch.
“Welcome back.”
She looked at the restored house.
Fresh paint.
New windows.
A garden beginning to bloom.
It was beautiful.
Not because it was perfect.
Because someone had cared enough to repair it.
Carmela looked at Noah.
“Thank you.”
He smiled.
“You did most of the planning.”
She shook her head.
“I mean for treating me like a person.”
His expression softened.
“That's a pretty low bar.”
Carmela laughed.
“It shouldn't be.”
Noah nodded.
May you like
“No. It shouldn't.”
And for the first time, Carmela began to believe that love might someday feel peaceful.
