Chapter 11 - THE RETURN OF CARMELA COSTELLO

Carmela returned to New York on a cold November morning.

She wore a dark green coat.

Her hair was shorter.

Her face was calm.

She had not changed her body to become acceptable to anyone.

She had changed the way she allowed people to treat her.

Rebecca walked beside her through the courthouse entrance.

Gabriel followed several steps behind.

Carmela had agreed to provide evidence concerning the fraudulent port transfers and the documents bearing her signature.

Her testimony was voluntary.

Her identity and safety had been protected while investigators established the circumstances of her father's death.

Now the central suspects were in custody.

It was time to stop hiding.

Reporters recognized her almost immediately.

“Mrs. Romano!”

“Carmela!”

“Where have you been?”

“Were you kidnapped?”

“Did your husband know?”

Carmela stopped.

Rebecca touched her arm.

“You don't have to answer.”

Carmela looked at the cameras.

For three years, she had smiled when strangers demanded it.

Today she would speak because she chose to.

“My name is Carmela Costello,” she said.

The crowd quieted.

“I have been safe. I have been cooperating with my legal team and the appropriate authorities.”

A reporter shouted:

“Are you returning to your husband?”

Carmela looked directly into the camera.

“No.”

The word was simple.

Final.

Powerful.

Across Manhattan, Silas watched the broadcast from his office.

For several seconds, he could not move.

Carmela.

Alive.

Standing beneath the courthouse steps.

Her voice steady.

Her eyes clear.

He reached toward the television.

Then stopped.

He wanted to call her.

To hear her voice.

To ask whether she was safe.

But the last word she had spoken was no.

He sat down slowly.

Tommy's betrayal had destroyed his trust.

Khloe's lies had destroyed his reputation.

Vincent's death had shattered the alliance.

But Carmela's return forced him to confront something far more painful.

She had survived without him.

And she did not want to come home.

At the courthouse, Carmela gave investigators the records her father had preserved.

She explained the documents she had signed.

The transactions she had never authorized.

The conversations she remembered.

She did not exaggerate.

She did not speculate.

She told the truth.

When the interview ended, Rebecca smiled.

“You did well.”

Carmela exhaled.

“I was terrified.”

“I know.”

Carmela looked toward the window.

“But I didn't run.”

Rebecca nodded.

“No. You didn't.”

That afternoon, Silas sent a message through her attorney.

I would like to speak with Carmela. Only if she agrees.

Rebecca showed it to her.

Carmela read the words.

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Then she looked up.

“Tell him I'll meet him.”

Rebecca frowned.

“Are you certain?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Carmela thought about the restaurant.

The white roses.

The laughter.

The woman she had been when she walked into the rain.

Then she answered:

“Somewhere public.”

May you like

She paused.

“And this time, I choose the table.”
