Chapter 14 - THE PROMISE BENEATH THE OLD PIANO

One year later, Mateo took Sophia back to the Connecticut estate.

The historical foundation had restored the blue music room.

The piano gleamed beneath the afternoon light.

Sophia stood in the doorway.

“Why are we here?”

Mateo smiled.

“I wanted you to see something.”

He led her toward the piano.

On the music stand lay a framed photograph.

Luca Vital.

Miriam Vale.

And Sophia's mother.

Sophia stared.

“Where did you find this?”

“Among the recovered archives.”

She touched the frame.

Tears filled her eyes.

Mateo stood beside her.

“They were trying to protect you.”

Sophia nodded.

For years, she'd believed the blue room represented danger.

Now it represented something else.

People who had tried to tell the truth.

People who had cared.

People who had refused to let Victor Bellamy own the future.

Mateo reached into his pocket.

Sophia turned.

He held a small velvet box.

Her breath caught.

“Sophia Bellamy.”

She began crying.

He smiled.

“I spent most of my life believing that protecting people meant controlling everything around them.”

His voice softened.

“You taught me that love isn't control.”

He opened the box.

Inside was a simple diamond ring.

“I can't promise the world will always be safe.”

Sophia smiled through tears.

“I know.”

“But I can promise I'll never ask you to become smaller so I can feel powerful.”

She covered her mouth.

“Will you marry me?”

Sophia laughed through tears.

“Yes.”

Mateo slipped the ring onto her finger.

Then kissed her.

Outside, sunlight fell across the gardens.

And for the first time, the blue room held no secrets.

Only music.

May you like

Memory.

And hope.
