Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN WHO CHOSE HER NAME

Sophia didn't return to work as Mateo's housekeeper.
Not because he forbade it.
Because she wanted something different.
For three years, she'd cleaned his home.
Now she wanted to rebuild her own life.
She enrolled in a nonprofit management program.
Used her knowledge of charitable finance to help organizations prevent fraud.
And began volunteering with women escaping coercive families.
Mateo supported her.
But when he offered to pay for everything, she refused.
He smiled.
“I expected that.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“Then why offer?”
“Because I wanted you to know you had a choice.”
Sophia studied him.
Then smiled.
“Thank you.”
Their relationship changed slowly.
Coffee became dinner.
Dinner became long walks.
Long walks became evenings spent talking until midnight.
One night, Sophia stood in Mateo's library.
She looked at the shelves.
The photographs.
The quiet room she'd once cleaned.
Mateo approached.
“Thinking?”
She smiled.
“Dangerous habit.”
He laughed.
She turned toward him.
“Do you know what frightened me most when I first came here?”
He shook his head.
“That you would discover who I was.”
Mateo nodded.
“And now?”
She looked at him.
“Now I'm afraid you'll only see the woman you rescued.”
His expression softened.
“Sophia.”
She waited.
“I see the woman who survived.”
Her eyes filled.
He continued.
“The woman who built a life when someone tried to erase her.”
She stepped closer.
“And what else?”
Mateo smiled.
“The woman I love.”
Sophia froze.
Then whispered:
“I love you too.”
And when he kissed her, it was gentle.
May you like
Unhurried.
A choice they both made.
