Chapter 14 - THE NIGHT THE FAMILIES STOOD FOR HER

One year after Damian humiliated Vivien at the Black Summit, the delegates returned to Castell Verde Estate.

The chandeliers glittered.

The tables were covered in white linen.

The same portraits watched from the walls.

But the atmosphere was different.

Damian was absent.

His legal proceedings were ongoing.

Seline had cooperated with investigators.

Bernard Kessler faced charges connected to the financial scheme.

And Vivien Ashcroft entered the ballroom alone.

She wore a deep blue dress.

Her hair was pinned back.

Around her throat was nothing but a simple gold chain.

The Donna necklace remained in the council vault.

As Vivien crossed the room, conversations stopped.

Kanti rose first.

Then Caterina.

Then the Bellandi delegation.

The Orsinis.

The Falcones.

The Marchettis.

One by one, every delegate stood.

Vivien stopped near the center of the ballroom.

She looked around.

For a moment, she remembered the previous year.

Damian's hand reaching toward her throat.

Seline lifting her chin.

The silence.

The humiliation.

Then she looked at the people standing before her.

And she understood something.

They weren't standing because she wore a symbol.

They were standing because she had done the work.

Because she'd protected the foundation.

Because she'd refused to hide the truth.

Because she'd chosen accountability over revenge.

Caterina approached.

"Donna."

Vivien smiled.

"Caterina."

The older woman gestured toward the head table.

"Your place is ready."

Vivien looked at the chair.

For thirty-one years, she had sat beside Damian.

Tonight, she sat at the head.

Not as someone's wife.

Not as someone's representative.

As herself.

When the meeting began, Vivien stood.

"I have one request."

The room quieted.

"No one kneels tonight."

Kanti smiled.

Vivien continued.

"Respect is not submission. Authority is not ownership. And tradition is only worth preserving when it protects the people who live under it."

She looked around the room.

"From now on, we will be judged by what we do."

The delegates listened.

Then, slowly, they applauded.

Vivien sat.

May you like

And for the first time, the applause did not feel like a performance.

It felt like a beginning.
