Chapter 12 - THE DIVORCE THAT CHANGED THE SUMMIT

Vivien filed for divorce in early spring.

The proceedings were difficult.

Damian contested several financial issues.

Then, as the investigations advanced, he agreed to negotiate through counsel.

Vivien insisted on separating her personal assets from the foundation and council funds.

She also refused any settlement that would interfere with restitution.

The divorce was finalized months later.

Vivien kept the Ashcroft townhouse.

Damian retained certain personal assets, subject to legal proceedings and financial obligations.

Their marriage ended quietly.

No ballroom.

No public announcement.

No dramatic confrontation.

Just signatures.

And the recognition that twenty-two years together did not obligate either person to spend the next twenty-two years repeating the same mistakes.

The following week, Vivien attended a council meeting.

Caterina greeted her at the door.

"How are you?"

Vivien considered.

"Sad."

Caterina nodded.

"And?"

Vivien smiled.

"Relieved."

The older woman squeezed her hand.

"Both are allowed."

Inside, the council had prepared a new proposal.

The chair would remain independent of marital status.

Succession rules would be clarified.

Financial oversight would be strengthened.

And no spouse or partner could claim authority through ceremonial jewelry alone.

Vivien reviewed the proposal.

Then made several amendments.

She wanted term limits.

Independent audits.

And a formal process for removing any chair who abused the position.

Kanti frowned.

"Even you?"

Vivien nodded.

"Especially me."

The room went quiet.

Then Caterina smiled.

"Your grandmother would have argued with you."

May you like

Vivien laughed.

"She usually did."
