Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT THE ESTATE LOST POWER

The attack came during a snowstorm.

It was just after midnight.

The Moretti estate was quiet.

Emily and Lily had returned temporarily to a secure guest wing after investigators advised that the estate's protected location could be used while alternative arrangements were completed.

Dante had insisted on additional independent security measures.

But the threat came from somewhere he hadn't expected.

At 12:17 a.m., the estate lost power.

Backup generators activated.

Emergency lights illuminated the corridors.

Marcus called Dante.

“Boss, we have a problem.”

“What?”

“Someone disabled the external monitoring connection.”

Dante's expression hardened.

“Can you restore it?”

“Working on it.”

Then a security alarm sounded near the service entrance.

Dante moved toward the guest wing.

Emily was already awake.

She stood in the hallway holding Lily.

“What happened?”

“Power issue,” Dante said.

Emily stared.

“Don't lie to me.”

He stopped.

“Someone may be trying to enter the property.”

Her face went pale.

Dante looked toward the security officer.

“Move them to the designated safe area.”

Lily clutched her watch.

“Mommy?”

Emily kissed her forehead.

“It's okay, sweetheart.”

The security team followed emergency procedures.

Police were notified.

The estate's access points were secured.

Minutes later, officers found two intruders near a maintenance entrance.

Both were detained.

No one was injured.

But the incident confirmed that someone was still trying to interfere with the investigation.

Later, Dante sat alone in his office.

He stared at the photograph of Emily and Lily that Victor had sent.

For years, he'd believed his estate was the safest place in Chicago.

Now he understood that walls and cameras meant nothing if the people controlling them couldn't be trusted.

Emily entered quietly.

“Dante?”

He looked up.

“Are you both all right?”

She nodded.

Then she sat opposite him.

“I need to ask you something.”

“Anything.”

“Why are you doing this?”

He frowned.

“Doing what?”

“Helping us.”

Dante looked down.

“Because I was wrong.”

Emily studied him.

“Is that all?”

He hesitated.

Then answered honestly.

“No.”

He looked toward the window.

“Because your daughter showed me something I should have seen years ago.”

Emily smiled sadly.

“What?”

“That being feared isn't the same as being trusted.”

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then Emily said, “Aaron used to say something like that.”

Dante looked at her.

“He said the strongest people are the ones who can admit when they're wrong.”

Dante closed his eyes.

And for the first time in years, he wished he had met Aaron Hayes before signing the order that ruined his life.
