Chapter 6 - THE DETECTIVE WHO CLOSED THE WRONG CASE

Detective Paul Brennan had spent twenty-three years with the Chicago Police Department.

He was respected.

Decorated.

And known for closing difficult cases quickly.

Aaron Hayes's death had been one of them.

The official report stated that Aaron lost control of his truck during heavy rain.

The vehicle struck a concrete barrier.

No other car was identified.

The investigation ended within two weeks.

But the recovered footage showed Brennan meeting Victor Salerno before the crash.

That changed everything.

Dante's attorney contacted an independent investigative team and provided the evidence through appropriate channels.

A formal review began.

Emily received a call from the investigators the following afternoon.

They wanted to speak with her.

She agreed.

Dante offered to accompany her.

She refused.

“I need to do this myself.”

He nodded.

“Of course.”

During the interview, Emily described Aaron's final weeks.

His fear.

His sleepless nights.

The strange cars outside their apartment.

The phone calls that ended whenever she entered the room.

Then she remembered something.

“The night before he died, he told me someone had offered him money.”

The investigator looked up.

“How much?”

“Five hundred thousand dollars.”

“For what?”

“To stop asking questions.”

Emily swallowed.

“He refused.”

The investigator asked whether Aaron had identified the person.

Emily shook her head.

“He said the man worked for someone powerful.”

The review expanded.

Financial records showed unexplained deposits into accounts connected to Brennan.

Several transfers originated from companies linked to Victor Salerno.

The evidence did not immediately prove murder.

But it raised serious questions about the integrity of the original investigation.

Then a witness came forward.

A retired truck driver named Samuel Price.

He had been traveling behind Aaron's vehicle the night of the crash.

Samuel told investigators he had seen a black SUV following Aaron.

Moments before the collision, the SUV accelerated.

Aaron's truck swerved.

Then struck the barrier.

Samuel had reported the SUV at the time.

But the detail was missing from the final police report.

When Emily heard this, she began crying.

For eleven months, she'd been told her husband had simply lost control.

Now she knew someone might have forced him off the road.

Dante stood beside the window while she spoke.

“I should have listened to him.”

Emily looked up.

“Yes.”

The word was quiet.

But it carried everything.

Dante nodded.

“I know.”

She wiped her tears.

“Then don't make this about your guilt.”

He looked at her.

“Make it about Aaron.”

Dante swallowed.

“Okay.”

And for the first time, he understood that helping Emily didn't mean becoming her savior.

It meant finally allowing the truth to be heard.
