Chapter 14 - THE PROMISE BESIDE THE LAKE

Two years after the night I returned home early, Delaney graduated from her first college certificate program.

She stood onstage with assistance when she wanted it.

The audience applauded.

I watched from the front row.

June sat beside me.

Delaney smiled.

And I felt proud in a way no business victory had ever made me feel.

After the ceremony, we celebrated at the estate.

There was music.

Food.

Laughter.

People moving freely through rooms that had once felt like a prison.

That evening, June and I walked beside Lake Michigan.

The wind was cool.

The water dark beneath the stars.

I took her hand.

"June."

She looked up.

"Yes?"

"I've been thinking."

She smiled.

"That sounds dangerous."

I laughed.

"Probably."

I stopped walking.

She turned toward me.

I reached into my coat pocket.

Her expression changed.

"Adrian?"

I lowered myself onto one knee.

For once, I had no prepared speech.

No strategy.

No certainty.

Only hope.

"June Carter," I said, "you taught me something I should have learned a long time ago."

Her eyes filled.

"What's that?"

"That love isn't control."

I took a breath.

"It's listening. Staying. Choosing someone even when the choice requires you to change."

She covered her mouth.

I opened the small velvet box.

Inside was a simple sapphire ring.

"Will you marry me?"

June stared.

Then began crying.

I waited.

For the first time in my life, waiting felt like the right thing to do.

Finally, she smiled.

"Yes."

My heart stopped.

She laughed.

"Yes, Adrian."

I stood.

May you like

She wrapped her arms around me.

And I kissed her beneath the stars.
