Chapter 12 - THE SISTER WHO FOUND HER VOICE

Delaney's recovery continued.

There were difficult days.

Frustrating days.

Days when she could write more easily than speak.

Days when fatigue made her want to stay in bed.

But there were also victories.

Small ones.

Meaningful ones.

One afternoon, Dr. Patel asked Delaney to choose an activity for her therapy session.

Delaney pointed toward the wooden blocks.

June smiled.

"The famous tower."

Delaney nodded.

They sat together on the rug.

This time, I joined them.

Delaney handed me a yellow block.

I placed it carefully.

She added a blue one.

June added red.

The tower leaned.

I reached to steady it.

Delaney shook her head.

I stopped.

The tower collapsed.

And she laughed.

Just as she had that first night.

I looked at June.

She smiled.

"Sometimes you have to let the tower fall."

I laughed.

"Apparently."

Later, Delaney asked for her notebook.

Not June's blue one.

Her own.

She wrote slowly.

Then turned the page toward me.

I WANT TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL.

I stared.

For fourteen months, her education had been treated as an impossible future.

Now she was asking for it.

I looked at Dr. Patel.

She smiled.

"We can explore supported options."

Delaney's eyes brightened.

Over the following months, she enrolled in a flexible college program.

She studied art history.

Attended classes with accommodations.

Made friends.

And began building a life beyond the estate.

One evening, she came into the library.

She stood beside my desk.

I looked up.

"Del?"

She smiled.

Then spoke.

Slowly.

Carefully.

"Adrian."

I stood.

She took a breath.

"Love you."

My eyes filled.

I crossed the room.

Held her gently.

"I love you too."

For fourteen months, I had waited for a miracle.

Now I understood that recovery was not a single moment.

May you like

It was a thousand moments.

And the most important thing I could do was be present for them.
