Chapter 15 - THE WOMAN WHO WAS NEVER ALONE AGAIN

Five years after the snowstorm, Mave Callahan stood outside the Blackstone Boulevard mansion on a clear winter evening.

The iron gate was open.

The driveway had been cleared.

And warm light spilled from the windows.

She wore a dark blue coat.

Her hair was pinned back.

And her left hand bore a faint scar where the glass had cut her years earlier.

She looked down at it.

Then smiled.

So much had changed.

Thornfield's fraudulent operations had been dismantled through legal proceedings.

The victims' families had pursued remedies.

The surviving residents received additional protections.

Mave had continued her nursing career.

She now helped train hospice nurses in ethical documentation and patient advocacy.

Rafe had spent years addressing the legal and personal consequences of his former life.

He had stepped away from criminal operations and devoted himself to legitimate business and charitable work.

Their relationship had grown slowly.

Through difficult conversations.

Through mistakes.

Through forgiveness that had to be earned rather than demanded.

They had married the previous summer.

A small ceremony in the garden of Teresa Balandi's restored house.

Birdie had cried through the entire service.

Gio had pretended not to.

Now Mave stood at the gate where she'd once collapsed.

Rafe approached from the house.

"What are you doing out here?"

She smiled.

"Remembering."

He looked toward the road.

"The snow?"

She nodded.

He stood beside her.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Rafe said:

"I thought you were going to die that night."

Mave looked at him.

"So did I."

He swallowed.

"I didn't know what to say when you woke up."

She laughed softly.

"You told me to drink water."

Rafe smiled.

"It seemed practical."

"It was."

He took her hand.

Mave looked toward the house.

"Do you remember what I asked you?"

Rafe nodded.

"Whether I was going to kill you or throw you outside."

She smiled faintly.

"And you told me we'd figure it out."

He looked at her.

"We did."

Mave shook her head gently.

"Not everything."

Rafe nodded.

"No."

She stepped closer.

"But enough."

He kissed her forehead.

Inside the house, Birdie called that dinner was ready.

Mave laughed.

Rafe offered his arm.

She took it.

Together, they walked toward the open door.

Five years earlier, Mave had arrived with nothing but a bleeding hand, a canvas bag, and evidence that powerful people wanted destroyed.

Now she had a career she loved.

A home.

A husband who respected her.

Friends who had become family.

And the knowledge that she had helped expose a system built on exploiting people who had nobody to defend them.

She had not been rescued from her own weakness.

She had survived because she was strong enough to keep moving when the world told her to stop.

And the man who found her in the snow had learned that love was not about possession or power.

It was about standing beside someone when the road disappeared.

At the doorway, Rafe stopped.

"Mave?"

She turned.

"Yes?"

He smiled.

"Drink a glass of water before dinner."

She burst out laughing.

"You're impossible."

He kissed her.

"And you're home."

Mave looked into the warm kitchen.

At Birdie.

At Gio.

At the table set for people who had chosen one another.

May you like

Then she stepped inside.

And for the first time in her life, she knew that no matter how dark the road became, she would never have to walk it alone again.
