Chapter 14 - THE HOUSE THAT BECAME A HOME

The Federal Hill house was eventually returned to the Balandi family through legal proceedings.

Rafe stood outside when the final documents arrived.

He held the keys in his palm.

For years, the house had represented loss.

Now it represented a choice.

He asked Mave to walk through it with him.

She agreed.

The rooms were dusty.

The garden was overgrown.

The kitchen needed repairs.

But the structure was sound.

Rafe looked around.

"I could sell it."

Mave nodded.

"You could."

"Or restore it."

She smiled.

"You could do that too."

He turned toward her.

"What would you do?"

Mave considered.

"I'd make it useful."

He frowned.

"Useful?"

She nodded.

"A place for families who need temporary housing while someone they love receives end-of-life care."

Rafe looked at her.

She continued.

"Not a hospital. Not a facility. Just somewhere warm and safe."

He smiled slowly.

"My mother would have liked that."

Mave nodded.

"I think so."

They worked with nonprofit advisers to establish the house as a family-support residence.

The project required planning, permits, funding, and independent governance.

Rafe contributed the property.

Mave helped design the care-support programs.

Birdie supervised the kitchen renovation.

The first family moved in the following autumn.

A woman whose husband was receiving hospice care.

She had been sleeping in her car.

When she saw the room, she began crying.

Mave stood beside her.

"You can stay here while you need it."

The woman covered her mouth.

"Thank you."

Mave smiled.

"You're welcome."

That evening, Rafe found Mave standing in the garden.

The rosemary had begun growing again.

He stepped beside her.

"Happy?"

She nodded.

"Very."

Rafe took her hand.

"Mave."

She looked at him.

"I love you."

Her eyes filled.

She smiled.

"I love you too."

May you like

He kissed her.

And beneath the old garden lights, the house that had once been stolen became a place where other people could find shelter.
