Chapter 7 - THE PREGNANCY THAT WASN'T WHAT IT SEEMED

Ethan stared at me.
“Where did you hear that name?”
I smiled faintly.
“Interesting reaction.”
“Claire.”
“Answer the question.”
He stood.
“Daniel Russo works for Victor Salerno.”
“I know.”
His expression hardened.
“How?”
I looked toward the windows.
Adrian had warned me not to reveal his return.
I wasn't going to betray him.
Not yet.
“Let's say I have friends.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“You have friends in Salerno's organization?”
“No.”
“Then who told you?”
I stood.
“Ethan, you divorced me. You don't get to interrogate me anymore.”
He stared.
For a moment, anger flashed across his face.
Then disappeared.
He looked exhausted.
“Claire.”
I waited.
He swallowed.
“I don't know who I can trust.”
Something in his voice surprised me.
Ethan Blackwood never admitted weakness.
Not to his men.
Not to his enemies.
Not even to me.
I looked at him.
Then said quietly, “You should start by trusting evidence.”
He nodded.
I continued.
“And you should stop assuming that people who tell you what you want to hear are telling the truth.”
He closed his eyes.
“I know.”
I walked toward the door.
“Then go find out who fathered Vanessa's baby.”
He hesitated.
“And you?”
I smiled.
“I'm going shopping.”
He stared.
“Shopping?”
“Yes.”
“For what?”
“A new dining table.”
He looked toward my living room.
“What's wrong with the old one?”
I smiled sweetly.
“It reminds me of my marriage.”

Then I opened the door.
And watched the most feared Mafia boss in Chicago leave my apartment looking like a man who had finally discovered that money couldn't buy intelligence.
