Chapter 13 - THE PRICE OF A SECOND CHANCE

Ethan came to see me one final time.
He arrived without security.
Without expensive gifts.
Without threats.
He knocked.
I opened the door.
“Ethan.”
He smiled sadly.
“Claire.”
I stepped aside.
He entered.
Then looked at the sofa.
“Still have it?”
“Obviously.”
He laughed softly.
For a moment, we were almost friends.
Then he turned.
“I owe you an apology.”
I folded my arms.
“Several.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
He looked down.
“I humiliated you.”
“Yes.”
“I blamed you for not getting pregnant.”
“Yes.”
“I believed Vanessa without questioning anything.”
“Yes.”
He swallowed.
“And I treated you like you were disposable.”
I said nothing.
Ethan looked at me.
“I was wrong.”
For years, I had imagined what it would feel like to hear those words.
Now they arrived without fireworks.
Without triumph.
Just a tired man standing in my living room.
I nodded.
“Thank you.”
He hesitated.
“Do you think we could ever try again?”
I looked at him.
Then smiled sadly.
“No.”
His face fell.
“Claire—”
“Ethan, I don't hate you.”
He stared.
“But I don't want to be your wife again.”
He looked away.
I continued.
“You wanted someone who made you feel powerful.”
His eyes filled.
“And I wanted someone who made me feel safe.”
A pause.
“Neither of us understood what love required.”
Ethan nodded slowly.
Then asked, “Are you happy?”
I thought of Adrian.
His laughter.
His patience.
The way he knocked before entering.
The way he listened.
Then I smiled.
“Yes.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
For a moment, I thought he might argue.
Instead, he nodded.
“Good.”
He walked toward the door.
Then stopped.
“Claire.”
“Yes?”
“You were the best thing that happened to me.”
I smiled sadly.
“Then I hope you learn to recognize the next good thing before you lose it.”
May you like
He nodded.
And left.
