Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN WHO RETURNED THE RING

Vanessa appeared at Dominic's office three weeks after the engagement collapsed.
She wore a white designer coat and dark sunglasses.
Her face looked thinner.
Her confidence seemed fragile.
Dominic agreed to meet only with legal counsel present.
He wanted no private conversation that could later be misrepresented.
Vanessa sat opposite him.
For several moments, she said nothing.
Then she placed the engagement ring on the table.
"I thought you might want this."
Dominic didn't touch it.
"Why are you here?"
She looked down.
"Victor lied to me."
Dominic's expression remained cold.
"About what?"
"The trust."
His attorney leaned forward.
Vanessa continued.
"He told me Benjamin needed specialized care. He said you were too overwhelmed by grief to make decisions."
Dominic stared.
"And you believed him?"
"At first."
"What about afterward?"
Her eyes filled.
"I knew some of the paperwork was wrong."
Silence.
Dominic looked at her.
"Then why did you continue?"
Vanessa swallowed.
"Because I wanted to marry you."
The words sounded pitiful.
Not romantic.
Not tragic.
Simply selfish.
Dominic leaned back.
"You were willing to hurt my son to become my wife."
She began crying.
"I never meant to hurt him."
"You withheld food."
"I thought—"
"You told him I didn't want him."
Her tears increased.
Dominic's voice remained controlled.
"You arranged questionable medical evaluations and used my name without my approval."
Vanessa looked down.
There was no answer that could erase those choices.
Finally, she whispered, "Victor said if Benjamin was placed in a residential facility, the trust arrangement would become easier."
Dominic's jaw tightened.
"Did Lorenzo know?"
Vanessa hesitated.
"My father knew about the financial plan."
His attorney made a note.
Dominic stared at her.
"And Isabella?"
Vanessa went very still.
"What about her?"
"Did your family know she was investigating the foundation?"
Vanessa looked away.
For several seconds, she remained silent.
Then whispered, "Yes."
Dominic stopped breathing.
"What?"
"My father said Isabella was causing problems."
His face drained.
"Before she died?"
Vanessa nodded.
"Yes."
Dominic closed his eyes.
He had suspected it.
Now he was hearing confirmation from the woman who almost became his wife.
Vanessa continued.
"I don't know what happened to her car. I swear."
Dominic opened his eyes.
"Then tell investigators everything you do know."
She looked frightened.
"Victor will destroy me."
Dominic shook his head.
"That doesn't change your responsibility."
Vanessa began crying again.
For years, people had excused her behavior because she was beautiful, wealthy, and connected.
Now someone was finally refusing.
Dominic stood.
"The meeting is over."
Vanessa looked up.
"Dominic, please."
He paused.
"I loved the idea of giving Benjamin a mother again."
His voice broke.
"But I chose someone who made him afraid."
Vanessa lowered her head.
"That is a mistake I intend to spend the rest of my life making sure he never suffers again."
He walked out.
That afternoon, Vanessa's attorney contacted investigators to discuss cooperation.
Her statement added new information to the foundation inquiry.
It also confirmed that Victor and Lorenzo had discussed Benjamin's trust interests long before the engagement.
The case was growing.
But Dominic's priorities had changed.
He no longer spent his days trying to control the investigation.
He spent more time with Benjamin.
They cooked breakfast.
Visited museums.
Built model airplanes.
Attended therapy sessions together when recommended.
And every evening, Dominic asked one question.
"How was your day, Benny?"
At first, Benjamin answered with one or two words.
Then longer sentences.
Then stories.
And one night, the little boy said something that made Dominic laugh until tears filled his eyes.
"Daddy, I think you're getting better at being a dad."
Dominic hugged him.
"I'm trying, son."
Benjamin smiled.
May you like
"I can tell."
