Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT THE TRUTH CAME HOME

The independent investigation uncovered evidence of substantial financial misconduct within the Moretti Family Foundation.

Funds intended for children's programs had been redirected through companies connected to Victor Moretti and Lorenzo Bellini.

Some medical service records contained unsupported billing claims.

Several contracts lacked proper authorization.

And documents relating to Benjamin's trust appeared to have been prepared using inaccurate representations of his health and needs.

But the investigation into Isabella's death remained separate.

The financial wrongdoing did not automatically establish that anyone had caused the crash.

Detective Olivia Grant insisted on that distinction.

Dominic found it difficult.

He wanted answers.

He wanted someone to blame.

But he'd begun learning that certainty without evidence could become another form of cruelty.

One afternoon, Olivia called.

"We've located the mechanic who serviced Isabella's vehicle before the crash."

Dominic went still.

"What did he say?"

"He remembers the appointment."

"Was the vehicle damaged?"

"He says he was instructed to inspect a warning light. He did not find a mechanical defect requiring major repairs."

Dominic exhaled.

"Then what happened?"

"Another employee later accessed the service records. We're investigating why."

The detective paused.

"Dominic, there's something else."

"What?"

"We found correspondence indicating Isabella planned to deliver evidence to an outside attorney the morning after the crash."

His throat tightened.

"She never made it."

"No."

Olivia continued.

"We have not established that the crash was intentional. But we now know she was actively preparing to report financial misconduct."

Dominic closed his eyes.

For six years, he'd imagined Isabella driving through the rain after their argument.

Angry.

Upset.

Distracted.

He'd blamed himself.

Now he understood that she had been carrying a burden he hadn't recognized.

And regardless of what caused the crash, his refusal to listen had left her facing that burden alone.

That evening, he entered the music room.

Benjamin was sitting at the piano.

Claire sat beside him, helping him identify the notes.

The boy pressed three keys.

A clumsy little melody filled the room.

Dominic stopped.

For six years, the piano had remained silent.

Now music was returning.

Benjamin looked up.

"Daddy!"

Dominic smiled.

"What are you playing?"

"Mommy's song."

His expression changed.

Claire looked at him gently.

"Benjamin asked me to teach him."

Dominic approached.

"May I listen?"

Benjamin nodded enthusiastically.

He played the melody again.

Slowly.

Carefully.

A few notes were wrong.

But Dominic recognized it immediately.

Isabella used to play that song when Benjamin couldn't sleep.

He sat beside his son.

For a moment, he couldn't speak.

Then he whispered, "Your mother loved that song."

Benjamin looked up.

"Do you think she'd like hearing me play it?"

Dominic's eyes filled.

"More than anything."

The boy smiled.

Then continued playing.

Claire rose quietly.

She intended to leave them alone.

But Dominic looked up.

"Claire?"

She stopped.

"Yes?"

"Please stay."

I hesitated.

He smiled faintly.

"Benjamin wants to show both of us."

For the first time, I sat beside Dominic without feeling like an employee waiting for instructions.

We listened to Benjamin play.

May you like

And somewhere between the wrong notes and the little boy's proud smile, the house began to feel alive again.
