Chapter 14 - THE PROPOSAL AT THE FOOD TRUCK

Two years after Victor first tasted Alice's stew, Harborline officially opened.
The building had been redesigned.
Its financial records were independently audited.
The construction workers who completed it were invited to the opening ceremony.
Alice's Kitchen catered the event.
Victor stood beside the entrance.
Marco approached.
"Sir, everything is ready."
Victor nodded.
"Thank you."
Marco hesitated.
"Are you nervous?"
Victor looked at him.
"About what?"
Marco smiled.
"You know."
Victor sighed.
"Go away."
Alice arrived with Ben.
She wore a simple cream dress.
Ben carried a small wooden box.
Victor approached.
"Alice."
She smiled.
"Victor."
He took her hand.
"Do you remember the first day we met?"
She laughed.
"You cut the line."
"I did."
"And you didn't say please."
"I remember."
Victor smiled.
"That day, I thought I was inspecting a construction project."
Alice raised an eyebrow.
"And?"
He looked at her.
"I was wrong."
He took a breath.
"I was inspecting the life I'd built. And for the first time, I realized how empty it was."
Alice's eyes filled.
Ben handed him the box.
Victor opened it.
Inside was a diamond ring.
"Alice Mercer, you taught me that respect isn't something people owe you because they're afraid."
His voice trembled.
"You taught me that kindness is strength."
He knelt.
"And you taught me that a home isn't something you buy."
Alice covered her mouth.
"It's something you build with people who choose to stay."
He looked into her eyes.
"Will you marry me?"
Alice began crying.
Then laughed.
"Yes."
Victor closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked like a man who had just been given something he never expected to deserve.
Then he stood and embraced her.

Ben threw his arms around them both.
And outside the building that had nearly destroyed their lives, a new family began.
