Chapter 11 - THE KITCHEN THAT BUILT A HOME

Alice reopened her food truck in the spring.
Victor offered to buy her a new one.
She refused.
Then she reconsidered.
Not because she wanted a gift.
Because the old truck had become unsafe, and she was tired of risking her livelihood every morning.
They agreed on a documented business loan through an independent lender.
Alice would own the truck.
She would repay it on terms she could afford.
Victor would have no control over her business.
The new truck was bright blue.
The words Alice's Kitchen were painted across the side in white.
Ben insisted on adding a small drawing of a bridge beneath the lettering.
Alice laughed.
"Why a bridge?"
Ben looked at Victor.
"Because bridges connect things."
Victor smiled.
Business grew quickly.
Construction workers returned.
Office employees began stopping by.
A local newspaper published a story about Alice's cooking.
Soon she was serving twice as many customers as before.
One afternoon, Victor arrived at the truck.
Alice handed him a bowl of stew.
"You're late."
He smiled.
"Traffic."
"That's a terrible excuse."
"I know."
She leaned against the counter.
"How's Harborline?"
"Under new management. Independent engineers approved the revised foundation plans."
"And the workers?"
"Back on payroll."
Alice nodded.
"Good."
Victor watched her for a moment.
Then said, "Would you have dinner with me?"
She raised an eyebrow.
"You're already eating."
"Not here."
Alice stared.
"A date?"
He nodded.
For the first time since Daniel died, Alice felt something she had almost forgotten.
Hope.
She smiled.
"Ask me again when I'm not holding a ladle."
Victor laughed.
Then stepped back.
"Alice Mercer, would you have dinner with me Friday night?"
May you like
She smiled.
"Yes."
