Chapter 4 - THE NURSE WHO LIED

The investigation into the night nurse began immediately.
Her name was Patricia Wells.
She had been assigned to Leo's care through a private medical staffing agency.
When questioned, she insisted she'd fallen asleep from exhaustion.
But the wineglass beside her chair told a different story.
The hospital's review identified failures in supervision and documentation. Patricia was removed from Leo's care while the agency and relevant authorities investigated.
I wanted her punished.
Luca Moretti, my security chief, understood that.
“Boss,” he said quietly, “let the licensing board and investigators handle it.”
I stared at him.
“You think I need reminding?”
He didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
I turned toward the window.
“Fine.”
But there was another problem.
The nurse's phone contained messages to an unknown number.
He's weaker today.
The father still believes the doctors.
No changes in security.
Luca showed me the screenshots.
My blood turned cold.
“Who was she talking to?”
“We don't know yet.”
I looked at the messages again.
The timestamps matched several nights when Leo's condition had worsened.
“Was she deliberately harming him?”
“We don't have evidence of that,” Luca said. “The medical team is reviewing everything. But someone was receiving information about his condition.”
I stared at the screen.
Someone had been watching my son.
Waiting.
I thought about Sophia.
The explosion.
The funeral.
The people I'd blamed.
The revenge I'd taken.
And the terrible possibility that the danger had never ended.
“Find out who owns that number,” I said.
Luca nodded.
“Through the investigators.”
I looked at him.
He held my gaze.
I exhaled.
“Yes.”
Then I turned toward the nursery.
Through the glass, Hannah was sitting beside Leo.
She was reading a children's book aloud.
Her voice was soft.
May you like
My son slept.
And I realized that if someone had been using Leo's illness to hurt me, Hannah might now be in danger too.
